Sevierville Fire Damage Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

Positioned as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Sevierville is an ideal starting point for exploring the region's natural beauty. The town offers convenient access to hiking trails, scenic drives, and outdoor activities in the national park. The city also boasts a range of family-friendly attractions, including the RainForest Adventures Discovery Zoo and the Tennessee Museum of Aviation. The Tanger Outlets offer a premium shopping experience, featuring several designer and brand-name stores.

A thorough strategy for fire damage restoration in Sevierville properties is crucial for authentic space revival, as the impact of fire extends beyond what meets the eye on the burned surfaces. Smoke and soot remnants can permeate every corner and crevice, jeopardizing indoor air quality. Furthermore, the water damage from fire fighting activities can worsen the scenario, fostering mold development and causing structural problems. In such challenging times, turning to professionals like SERVPRO® for fire damage restoration can make all the difference. One of the most challenging aspects of fire restoration is carpets and upholstery.

Restoration steps for carpet and upholstery

  • Water extraction
  • Soot and smoke removal
  • Odor elimination

Carpets and upholstery, as absorbent materials, often suffer water damage during firefighting. SERVPRO employs powerful extraction tools like dry/wet vacuum and self-propelled extraction tools to remove excess water.

Soot and Smoke Residue Removal on Carpet and Upholstery

Soot and smoke residues are notorious for their ability to seep into fabrics, fibers, and surfaces, creating a stubborn layer that seems nearly impossible to eliminate. Soot particles can range from light dust to heavy, thick deposits depending on the intensity of the fire. This poses a unique challenge for homeowners attempting to restore their living spaces after a fire incident. DIY cleaning methods often fall short, merely scratching the surface while leaving traces of odor and discoloration. SERVPRO crews are equipped with the expertise and advanced techniques necessary to tackle soot and smoke residue removal on carpets comprehensively, including;

  • Deluxe precondition and rinse
  • Showcase
  • Rotary jet extraction

The Showcase cleaning method involves a dual-phase process, essentially entailing a two-fold carpet cleaning procedure. Initially, the carpet undergoes roto-based shampooing in the initial step. This process employs shampoo super concentrate, and adding showcase cleaner and rinse to the solution enhances the pH to approximately 10, thereby elevating the cleaning efficacy.

A proper cleaning approach is essential for successful fire damage restoration.

Safely completing fire damage restoration in your Sevierville property is essential, so enhancing safety at every stage, including the cleaning process. Our SERVPRO crews are well-equipped with protective clothing and accessories such as splash goggles, respirators, gloves, and rubber boots.

PPE eases cleaning tasks such as

  • Tearing down charred drywall remains
  • Abrasive cleaning, such as sanding to restore charred areas
  • Applying chemical agents to heavily soiled or stained areas
  • Manipulation contents around the work site

Preparing the loss site before starting cleanup helps improve the process, although you may consider it a waste of time. Preparation establishes order, determining what cleaning aspects to prioritize or delay.

How preparation improves the cleaning process

The soiling and damages caused by fires are usually widespread; therefore, resolving them requires significant effort, resources, and time. However, some resources, such as equipment and accessories, can create bottlenecks that impede the process. Our SERVPRO crews start the process by isolating a section of the property as a staging area for holding the equipment when not in use or for mixing cleaning products eliminating impediments such as tangled cables and hoses or slick floors, allowing for timely execution of cleaning processes.

Necessary cleaning steps after a fire

  • Vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered device to remove most soot and ash traces
  • Wiping flat surfaces with chemical sponges to remove attached soot without leaving smudges
  • Aggregating and resizing debris into manageable chunks

We Restore Fire Damages to Pre-Loss Condition

With the tourism industry being such a driving force in the economy and livelihood of many of the Sevierville residents, home and commercial fires can be destructive in more ways than one. After the first notice of loss with fires and smoke damage, our objective is to mitigate threatening conditions as rapidly as possible. The earliest concerns for the household that mitigation can help resolve include:

  • Debris
  • Smoke
  • Ruined Materials
  • Water Damage
  • Odors

To provide the effective mitigation services necessary for Sevierville fire damage, we must have technicians ready to move when disasters strike. With a growing roster of FSRT-Certified specialists, we have experts available 24/7 to help with needed actions. This swift response is even more vital when considering the city's hundreds of tourist attractions, accommodations, and restaurants.

Large Loss Ready

Because of how commercially and entertainment-driven our community is, the fire restoration professionals of our SERVPRO team must be prepared to face larger loss scenarios. More than the professional finish and restoration result we provide, the allure of talented technicians is containing the damaged areas to continue operating businesses in a limited capacity to serve customers. Restoration and recovery then continue in enclosed spaces and during off-hours.

Emergency Services After Fire Damage

Whether it is a business, a home, or a historic property like the Riley H. Andres House, the urgency of fire recovery is the same. Our professionals begin by implementing several initial actions that reduce the destruction of impacted households. Some of the emergency services necessary for structures include:

  • Water Removal Services – The extinguishment process uses high volumes of water, which remain on floors and become absorbed into porous materials. We have several water removal strategies to help after fire dousing.
  • Debris Removal – Heaps of blistered materials, ash, and remnants of combusted building elements must get removed after fire damage to reduce the severity of smoke odors and soot particles.
  • Controlled Demolition – This process targets structural instability or vulnerabilities that could pose concerns for restoration professionals or structure occupants.
  • Content Relocation – We move any contents from the damage path and earmark impacted personal belongings for on-site or off-site recovery.

The Threats of Soot Damage

Soot is a significant hazard to the house or business. Our SERVPRO FSRT-Certified team's priority is to reduce the presence of residues and smoke solid deposits on surfaces. Several approaches for removing wet and dry smoke damage include alkaline cleaners and mechanical action with steel wool or brushes.

Smoke Malodors Must Get Removed

While it is often one of the final restoration hurdles to restore preloss condition for your home, malodors are not easily removed without a combination of several deodorization practices and products. It is essential to reduce the severity of smoke smells through counteractant tactics like surface cleaning and air scrubbing. With less severe malodors, fogging and ozone machines can be more efficient.

What Fire Damage Repairs Are Necessary?

Few structure fires do not ultimately require some form of demolition and reconstruction services. Fortunately, we have the accreditation and recognition as accomplished and knowledgeable professionals completing a wide range of possible build-back services with a building contractor license. Reconstruction can include:

  • Rebuilding
  • Controlled Demolition
  • Utility Repairs

SERVPRO Cleans Carpets and Upholstery in Sevierville During Fire Damage Restoration

Fire damage is one of the worst experiences any homeowner can face. Apart from destroying property, it leaves behind unsightly stains and unpleasant smells. But, if you work with the right service provider who uses professional cleaning procedures, restoring your upholstery and carpets to their preloss state can be possible.

When restoring fire-damaged homes in Sevierville, our SERVPRO technicians may remove loose debris and soot by vacuuming. It helps reduce additional damage and makes stain removal and cleaning easier. Through the use of a dry chemical sponge, it is possible to remove any remaining ash and debris and prevent it from re-depositing on the already cleaned areas.

Some of the techniques that our technicians use when cleaning your property include:

  • Dry Cleaning: A special machine and a dry cleaning solution are used in this technique. Soot and smoke particles are lifted from the fibers. Despite being an effective and quick method, it is only suitable for some upholstery and carpets.
  • Steam cleaning: We use a detergent and hot water to remove stains and soot. It is a very thorough technique that suits most upholstery and carpets.
  • Shampooing: First, our SERVPRO technicians apply a cleaning detergent to the surface, then with the help of a machine agitation, we do agitation to remove the stains.
  • Ozone treatment: Ozone is used to neutralize lingering smoke odors.
  • Bonnet cleaning: A cleaning detergent, a rotating pad, or a bonnet removes stains and dirt.

It is important to note that successful restoration cannot happen to all carpets; some should be replaced when severe damage occurs. The best thing you should do after such an experience is to immediately call a professional restoration company since they have the expertise, equipment, and tools to do the job right.

Don't hesitate to call SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties at (865) 429-8885 for professional and efficient fire damage restoration services. Our company is Faster to Any Size Disaster and can assist you in returning your property to normal within no time.

Textile Restoration and Odor Removal after Fire Damage in your Gatlinburg Home

Leaving a portable heater on overnight can catch onto dry fabrics or materials in the home and result in a small fire. While these types of fire are generally quick to contain and control, they release a significant amount of hot ash, carbon, and smoke into the home. When surveying your home, you are likely to find blackening on walls and ceilings and a thick, unpleasant smoke odor. Unfortunately, removing the areas of soiling does not always eliminate a scent that can quickly absorb into textiles and fabrics typical to the home environment.

Not all fire damage in Gatlinburg requires structural restoration to your home. The most common issues facing homeowners are related to contents. Blankets, clothing items, sofa covers, pillows, and curtains can often take on smoke odors. It is not always viable for a homeowner to fully replace the numerous textiles in the home, which is where SERVPRO contents cleaning can help pick up the slack.

Odor particles can be microscopic, which allows them to enter and bond with particles in porous contents. Once inside, these odors can be stubborn and unresponsive to vacuuming or regular washing. At SERVPRO, our contents cleaning specialists can assess different types of fabrics, cleaning chemicals, and deodorants for use on materials. We usually can group and catalog textiles, which can then be taken to a storage facility while they await restoration.

Fire insurance plans often include contents cleaning, meaning they do not add extra expense to your home restoration after a fire. SERVPRO cleaning appliances are designed for industrial and commercial cleaning, which can be more rigorous than your washing machine. When cleaning fabrics, our team uses a combination of cleaning mixtures and deodorants to remove the offending odor successfully. Once smoke odors are removed, we can return them to you in a pre loss condition, "Like it never even happened."

Replacing all textiles in your home can carry high costs. Contact SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties at (865) 429-8885 for restoration options.

Fire Restoration Cleaning for Your Gatlinburg Home

The task of restorative cleaning after a fire loss occurs in your Gatlinburg home can be a unique challenge that many property owners cannot face alone. Our SERVPRO cleaning technicians have extensive training through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in many facets of fire damage recovery. Thorough education of restorative practices, cleaning techniques, and what to expect in even severe fire loss scenarios prepares our team to execute the proper action plan.

After fire damage to Gatlinburg homes, many look to our experienced team of recovery specialists to begin the process of returning the residence to pre loss condition. Establishing what the property needs to reach this point is one of the critical scoping practices necessary by our project management, crew chief, and the homeowner. Documentation of the current conditions of structural elements, contents, and the structure itself dictates the necessary steps to reach this goal.

An unfortunate part of cleaning up after a fire is determining the areas and contents of your house too severely damaged to restore with our advanced techniques. Because fire and smoke damage exist in rooms and spaces far beyond the initial ignition point, there are probably many structural points and contents close to the fire's origin that are too severely charred, blistered or burned to restore. Those that can, however, allow our SERVPRO team to get to work quickly with agitation cleaning techniques relative to the surface damage, leading up to abrasive cleaning tactics like soda blasting.

Many homeowners mistakenly believe that fire recovery means an overall renovation and revitalization of the property when, in truth, pre-existing conditions and problems within your house do not get addressed in fire loss restoration unless they hinder the process. We can make fire losses "Like it never even happened," but that leaves these pre-existing damages recognized and documented but unaddressed.

Knowing what to expect from our professional fire restoration team can help the entire process quickly and seamlessly. With our experience and advanced equipment, our SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties can help when disasters strike. Give us a call today at (865) 429-8885.

Determining the Future of Contents with Varying Degrees of Fire and Smoke Damage in Your Gatlinburg Home

During a fire, your Gatlinburg home's structure takes a serious beating. The things inside, your house's contents and your family's personal belongings, also become adversely affected by smoke and the heat from the flames. We have a crew that addresses your rebuilding needs, but we also want to help reduce your family's restoration costs further by restoring as many personal belongings and household items as we can.

We use different methods to clean soiled items for our customers in Gatlinburg when soot and fire damage affects their possessions. Before we can do this, we need to sort through everything and place things into groups. We categorize your belongings according to type of material and the damage sustained.

We place items that need only a wipe-down with a dry sponge or other basic cleaning method into one group. These might need dry sponging, or a gentle cleansing and rinse. This often works well for fine china and similar items. Books often require vacuuming in place. Carpets and rugs need soot-cutting cleaning agents for adequate restoration.

Our building department can help restore much of your family's electronic equipment. They check for damage caused by smoke, soot deposits, heat, and firefighters' water. They recommend you do not turn any items on before they examine them. Doing so can cause shorts in the wiring or circuit boards and ruin the item permanently.

Any items that require care at our facility go into boxes to protect them from breakage during transportation and storage. We attach a detailed inventory sheet to each box and this follows the corresponding items throughout the process, until we return it to you.

When we come across belongings that became so damaged by the fire that we cannot restore them, we compile another list of these items to help you with replacing them. This list can also help you when placing a claim with your insurance agency.

SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties handles emergencies involving fire and smoke damage near Pigeon Forge, Jefferson City, and Newport. For a highly skilled team with knowledge of the most effective restoration methods, call (865) 429-8885.

Odor Removal Tools Preferred For Fire-Damaged Sevierville Homes

Fire loss incidents in Sevierville homes come with a range of potential effects, and widespread odors can be one of them. Deodorization is one of the many restoration services our SERVPRO team can offer your fire-damaged property, and we have multiple powerful tools and advanced devices to do it. Which machines get used depends on the type of materials affected and the available space within this damaged region of your house.

Our team must help overcome several effects of fire damage in Sevierville homes beginning as soon as we arrive; deodorization can be a threat that makes comfortable living difficult. Even with minor flare-ups that do not require your family to relocate, you cannot expect to move on from the traumatic fire loss incident without addressing the lingering effects. Our professionals use many standard units to address foul and noxious odors in your home after a fire:

  • Hydroxyl Generators:These units can affect a broad area of your home, making them ideal for open spaces. Through the use of UV radiation reacting with water vapor, these units can both clean and deodorize environments where they get placed.
  • Thermal Foggers:These are portable units that can move with the technician to address specific problem areas of the house. A cleaning solution gets vaporized and turned into a dense fog that can neutralize odor molecules on contact through thermal power.
  • Ozone Generators:While we also have larger chambers in our SERVPRO facility, these smaller units can address odors by producing ozone that bonds with odor compounds and eliminates them. This process is hazardous to humans and pets, so our team carefully regulates the use of this machine.

These deodorizers can help address embedded odors within materials, textiles, clothing, and other areas of your house. Even where these smoke effects have permeated walls and other surfaces, our capable devices can help. Trust our SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties team whenever you contend with fire losses to help. Give us a call anytime at (865) 429-8885.

Multiple Considerations Make Post-fire Cleaning in Gatlinburg More Thorough and Effective

Every fire restoration project involves hundreds of cleaning decisions by our experienced professionals. After these damaging events, cleaning up the structure can apply multiple practices simultaneously, much of which gets determined by a thorough scope of the affected area and a catalog of the damage a home experiences.

Understanding the Scope of the Damage

When fire restoration in Gatlinburg homes begins, it starts with a complete evaluation of what areas in the house have become compromised by post-fire effects. Even with a speedy extinguishment, there are lingering concerns within a damaged home that require intricate cleaning and recovery. We can also inspect contents item by item to determine if on-site cleaning or pack-out processes are necessary to restore these belongings.

Choosing the Best Cleaning Method

With dozens of products and cleaning methods for soot and smoke residues, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Choices are made based on factors like the underlying material, thickness of the residue, and soil composition.

Categorizing Damaged Materials

It is important to designate the type of materials and damage to ensure the appropriate products and equipment are used for restoration and repairs. Some of the categorizing criteria include:

  • Washable – This determines whether a surface can physically endure being cleaned, namely with wet cleaning products and solutions.

  • Porosity – This is a measure of the pores that can trap dirt, debris, smoke particles, and other fire damage effects in an exposed structural material. The higher the porosity, the greater the possibility of more complicated cleaning measures.
  • Soil Composition – The type of smoke residue also impacts the needed cleaning approach. For example, oil-based soils require measures like dry solvents to resolve.

Fires can be among the more destructive and damaging situations for area homes, making it vital for experienced professionals like our SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson, & Cocke Counties team to respond fast to help. We are ready 24/7 to mitigate losses when you call (865) 429-8885.

SERVPRO Offers Effective Fire Damage Restoration in Gatlinburg

Recovering from fire damage is a long process, but fire restoration has the highest opportunity for success if it happens within a short time. At this point, furniture finish and flooring can get damaged enough to require restoration or replacement.

Time is of the essence when you attempt to save your home's items from permanent damage. Therefore, you need to begin the process of fire damage restoration in your Gatlinburg residence as soon as possible. SERVPRO can assist you in restoring your home within a short period. • Immediate cleaning of the areas you need to use while remaining in your home.
  • Deodorization if there are strong odors.
  • Laundry or dry-cleaning services.

Should Professional Fire Damage Restoration Be Done After a Grease Fire in a Gatlinburg Kitchen?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

aftermath of kitchen fire; charred microwave, cabinets Kitchen fires usually involve grease and proteins, and are difficult to remove. SERVPRO is always on call to restore your home.

SERVPRO Technicians Can Handle Any Size Housefire Cleanup in Gatlinburg

A grease fire in a Gatlinburg kitchen can quickly wreak havoc, leaving behind a large amount of fire damage in its wake. SERVPRO has some tips for homeowners to help prevent this type of damage and what to do if it happens.

One of the biggest mistakes made that leads to the need for fire damage restoration in Gatlinburg properties is when a homeowner attempts to extinguish a flaming pan on a stovetop with water. The water instantly turns into vapor upon contact with hot oil and spreads the fire around the kitchen, creating a high heat, fast-burning fire. Another mistake is throwing flour or sugar on an active fire, even a smoldering one, both of these foodstuffs are flammable and only add fuel to the ongoing fire.

What to Do If a Grease Fire Happens

Attempting to take a flaming pan outside the home can spread the flames or cause burns to people or pets in the house. Instead, do the following:

  • Turn off the stove at the main power supply if the stovetop is inaccessible
  • Use a tight-fitting metal lid to deprive the flames of oxygen and extinguish the fire
  • Use baking soda or salt to extinguish the fire
  • If using a fire extinguisher, use only a class B containing AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam)

It is not unusual for SERVPRO techs to remove the cabinets and appliances during the fire restoration process. Smoke damage is a large part of this type of fire, and thick, foul protein residues are another frequently seen challenge. The technicians bring professional-grade cleaning agents to remove these substances without marring surfaces.

SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties at (865) 429-8885 serves the local Gatlinburg community through professional fire damage restoration services.

Fire damage in a home. Fire damage to your home can be heart shattering, call SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties if a fire strikes your home.

As leading fire restoration professionals for the counties we serve, our SERVPRO team provides efficient solutions for soot and smoke residues on surfaces. As threatening as these can be to underlying materials, we work quickly to remove oily or wet soils and restore the damage they cause.

Using Solvents to Manage Oily Residues

Solvents are often alkaline-based, allowing them to be highly effective cleaners during fire restoration in Sevierville homes. Because many of the oily residues and soils present after a fire have a slight acidic property, counteracting this composition with alkalinity can neutralize pH concerns and make the cleaning process efficient and complete. Because these solvents might be harsh, personal protective equipment is required, including:

Preventing Damage to the Underlying Substrates

The type of material affected also plays a role in cleaning and restoring that is possible. Highly acidic residues cannot be cleaned with acidic solvents, for example, as this can remove the finish from cabinets and wood. Sampling the type of cleaning and soot removal solutions can find the ideal product and method to remove oily residues and damaging soils.

Instead, this Enduring Mist Creates an Astoundingly Beautiful Haven for Gatlinburg’s Wildlife

Much of the wildlife in Gatlinburg lives above our heads. The plentiful birds bring many tourists to our area. Bird watching is a timeless pastime that people of all ages enjoy – as both solo enthusiasts and those who pass it down to youngsters in their family.

The ecology of the Smoky Mountains supports a variety of different mammals and reptiles, and birds. Only a few animals in the Smoky Mountains pose any threat to people but staying safe when outdoors should remain a priority, especially when youngsters engage in outdoor activities. Animals are not the only source of possible problems.

When spending time outside, especially in wooded areas, please take care regarding

  • Seasonal elements like intense winter cold or insects in summer (fire ants are becoming more common),
  • Snakes hidden from view inside logs or windblown piles of leaves,
  • Poisonous berries and mushrooms (just because you see wildlife eating something does not mean it is safe for people to eat), and
  • Mishaps caused by uneven terrain or exposed tree roots, among other hazards.

Visiting an area that others have made safer through marked trails, smoothed-over terrain, and other amenities can also make learning about animals more enjoyable. No matter your age or amount of knowledge, interacting with animals can decrease stress. Instead of enclosing the animals inside pens or cages, marking specific areas protects wild animals in their natural environment.

Two Distinct Places Near Gatlinburg Provide the Public with Safe Contact with Wildlife

Although many families in Tennessee use deer and other animals to supplement their pantries, up-close interaction does not happen in the same way as it does with a family pet. Without our wild critters, Tennessee would not feel like home.

Seven Islands State Birding Park in Kodak

Almost 200 different kinds of birds make this area home for at least part of the year. Located under migratory paths of several species, many rest here during seasonal flights. This State Park offers much more than what its name implies, however. Visitors can enjoy nature hikes, boating and fishing, and viewing other wildlife.

Across the Park’s 416 acres lay different types of settings that support birds and other living creatures:

  • Flat areas once used for farming, complete with old barns that attract barn owls and sparrows,
  • The French Broad River, a haven for waterfowl, including herons,
  • Wildflower meadows, perfect for small birds and butterflies, and
  • Forested areas that harbor many birds, including woodpeckers, particularly along the Hickory Ridge Trail.

The Smoky Mountain Deer Farm Exotic Petting Zoo and Horseback Riding Stables in Sevierville

If your family wants more than bird watching, getting some hands-on, up-close interactions with gentle creatures like camels, horses, deer, and elk, larger birds like the emu, or even a kangaroo, a petting zoo is perfect.

This petting zoo keeps the animals in larger enclosures and stables, complete with ongoing regular veterinary care and weight limits on the animal rides. Caring for animals helps build empathy for others and is an excellent way to help teach children. Adults can find it therapeutic in that it dramatically relieves stress.

Over the winter, pregnant deer and elk begin showing, with males growing their antlers, complete with light fur on their living crowns. These animals give birth starting in late May, as well as in June and July. There are plenty of other animals you can see, touch, feed, and photograph.

  • Goats,
  • Zebras, zonkies, and donkeys,
  • Pot-bellied pigs from Vietnam,
  • Miniature horses and ponies, and
  • Cows, including the super-long-horned Watusi.

Because some of the animals included fall under the ‘prey animal’ classification. The petting zoo has an exemption from the ADA and does not permit service animals to enter the animal enclosures. A large zoo-keeping staff takes care of the animals living here, and their health and well-being are a priority. You can call (865) 428-3337 for more information about the stables, riding area, and petting zoo.

Scalable Services Ensure Minimal Costs, Efficiency, and Completeness for Our Customers in Gatlinburg

A Gatlinburg home can experience fire damage in many ways. Homeowners should address all damage, including minor destruction, to protect their investment and the health of their family members. This is so important and why SERVPRO technicians train to handle all stages, types, and degrees of fire damage.

Cleaning smoke deposits that coat your walls and ceilings after a neighbor’s home burns and leaves your house smoky-smelling prevents the odor-causing particles from creating permanent damage and affecting other areas of your residence. At the other end of the scale, SERVPRO can perform complete or partial demolition work and electrical systems installation, plumbing, painting, and installation of different flooring options.

SERVPRO Uses a Super-Fine Mist to Eliminate Odors from Fire Damage

While the mist covering our mountainside comes from evaporated water, smoke carries microscopic particles as the heat from burning materials pushes it throughout a Gatlinburg home’s structure, significantly increasing fire damage. These tiny particles come from partially combusted things and can remain in areas unaffected by any demolition work. These substances can cause problems like

  • Corrosion and etching of hard surfaces, particularly smooth or glossy ones,
  • Staining of absorbent furnishings, ranging from upholstery to hardwood flooring,
  • Creating static-charged web-like smoke tags in upper corners, and
  • Ongoing odors, which can aggravate or cause undesired health effects.

SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties helps protect local families by eliminating the toxins and other harmful substances created during a fire. Faster To Any Size Disaster, we know what it takes to ensure your home becomes livable and healthy. Our emergency line, (865) 429-8885, is always available, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Why Does Smoke Odor Linger Long After the Fire Ends?

SERVPRO Removes the Source of Odor as Quickly as Possible from Your Gatlinburg Kitchen

Even if a kitchen fire burns for a very short amount of time, the odor can remain in your Gatlinburg home for days or weeks after the fire.  Leaving plastic on a glass cooktop and having it melt causes a noxious odor that can be difficult to remove.  If at all possible, remove the odor source from the property. It would be best if you did not leave anything smoldering in your kitchen. It is crucial to remove both the plastic and cooktop right away to mitigate further damages and more pungent odors. However, even if you act quickly, you may have strong odors lingering for quite some time after the fire.

What Are Some Things Homeowners Can Do While Waiting for Professional Assistance?

SERVPRO's emergency response team takes steps to ventilate your home properly. While waiting for fire damage assistance in Gatlinburg, you may want to increase air movement within your home.  Using fans to pull stagnant air out of your home and open windows help rid your kitchen of some thick, smokey air by exchanging it for cooler outside air. Once the professional team at SERVPRO arrives, they will employ their industrial-strength equipment for faster results. Before enhancing interior ventilation, check with SERVPRO.

How Does SERVPRO Adequately Ventilate After a Fire?

  • SERVPRO fire technicians create a plan to ventilate your home, either using outside air in an open system or a closed system using air scrubbers with HEPA filters.
  • If the air outside is warmer than inside, technicians typically use a closed system.
  • Centrifugal air movers, using ducts, can port interior air to the exterior via a window
  • SERVPRO technicians use respirators in smoke-filled interiors

In addition to ventilation, technicians use various techniques and products to rid your home of smoke. Masking agents, deodorizers, and fogging equipment all work together to eliminate odors after a kitchen fire.

How Can Soot Get Removed from My Pigeon Forge Home?

8/31/2020 (Permalink)

Black home with boarded up windows After fire damage SERVPRO can help make it "Like it never even happened."

Depending on its location and the materials affected, soot can be a considerable threat to your property if not addressed quickly and deliberately.

Fire restoration and recovery can be an overwhelming process for Pigeon Forge homeowners. Seeing your property in such disarray after a structure fire can leave you questioning whether the house will ever look the same again. As a trusted restoration company for many insurance providers serving our area, we understand all of the obstacles we could face with your home's restoration and recovery. We work alongside your insurance adjuster to meet their expectations, needs, and limitations. In many ways, beginning as soon as our team first arrives, we are working to make fire losses, "Like it never even happened."

Among the most threatening conditions that exist after fire damage in Pigeon Forge homes are smoke residues and soot. These residues and circulating particles can be hazardous to the health of those exposed and provide a threat to the surfaces where these particulates come to rest. Addressing these concerns requires multiple strategies, equipment, and even qualified personnel.

How Does Soot Develop?

Despite the destruction you might see looking around your house after a fire gets extinguished, much of what you view is incomplete combustion. Half-burned materials and contents can often be a catalyst for soot production and smoke residues adhering to the walls, ceilings, and other surfaces throughout the house. Soot can be among the most dangerous and threatening presences in your home after a fire, specifically because of its effect on those exposed without the appropriate personal protective equipment. Our technicians responding to fire loss incidents arrive with respirators, coveralls, and other protective gear to ensure that we are not directly exposed to hazardous conditions until the property's appropriate evaluation has taken place. With soot concerns, the primary threatening aspects of this health hazard include:

  • Microscopic size
  • Carcinogenic
  • Acidic

How Can You Remove Smoke Residues from Wall and Ceiling Surfaces?

Our responding technicians' primary focus is to address smoke residues adhered to services throughout your property. The faster that we can remove these safely, the less threat of our technicians or the occupants of the house becoming exposed to threatening conditions. Also, our focus on eliminating soot buildup on the services of specific materials and wall systems can protect these materials from the particles' acidic nature. There are many factors involved in choosing the right approach for removing smoke residues, including the type of residue present, the thickness of the coating, the material underneath the residue, and other factors. Specific abrasive cleaning techniques could damage underlying materials if these considerations do not happen before cleaning begins. Among the popular choices for residue removal, we often consider:

  • Media Blasting – The premise of blasting involves using media like baking soda and pressurized water or air to dislodge and remove smoke residues from exposed materials' surfaces. This approach can impact the coating of soot exclusively without damaging the underlying substrate.
  • Dry Ice Blasting - Pressurized dry ice pellets (CO2) are placed in a hopper and then directed at slightly charred roof members to scrape off a thin layer of carbonized wood. This means that supporting structures, especially for the roof, do not require demolition.
  • Surface Cleaning – Oily residues like you might find after proteins have burned, can be equally challenging to remove from specific surfaces. Emulsification is the best approach in these situations, and this occurs by introducing water-based solvents to the surfaces along with abrasive cleaning techniques.
  • Controlled Demolition – In more extreme cases where so the damage has already impacted the material to the point of degradation or staining, the suitable approach is to remove the affected portions of the construction material. Addressing the situation quickly can reduce a greater need for tear-out and reconstruction overall.

Can Soot Get Removed from Contents?

Protecting your personal belongings is also a focal point of our fast response to fire emergencies. Soot can be just as considerable of a threat to these possessions as it is to services throughout the home. In many situations, it is cost-effective and more efficient to relocate these damaged belongings to our SERVPRO facility for focused cleaning and restoration. We have several specific techniques designed exclusively to address smoke residues within varying materials. Some of these approaches include:

Will All the Odors and Soot Go Away?

Soot and smoke particles are often stubborn, making them a priority for each call we have to help with fire damage in Gatlinburg. Because the soot is acidic by nature, it can lead to corrosion of certain materials, such as metals. Our skilled technicians address harsh soot residue in several ways, including:

  • Wet or dry methods help to loosen smoke and soot particles from a variety of surface areas.
  • Thermal foggers work to heat up deodorizing agents to form a chemical cloud, which then penetrates the materials and helps pull out odorous particles.
  • When there is a substantial amount of smoke residue present on surfaces, we can seal the walls using a special primer. This gets followed up with the final paint color for a flawless finish.

What About the Air in My Home?

Indoor air quality is always essential with a fire restoration job, which is why we employ various filtration tools to pull out particulates from the air within your home. This helps eliminate lingering smoke odors while ensuring that your interior air is safe for inhabitants.

  • Air Scrubbers – these powerful tools inhibit microorganism colonization while reducing air particulates.
  • Hydroxyl Generators – this equipment deodorizes your interior while filtering and purifying the air with HEPA filtration.

What Kind of Air Purifying Equipment Helps Get Rid of the Smell?

  • Electronic filters kill microorganisms that are floating in the air as they go through the filter.
  • Ventilation fans pull outdoor air in the impacted area while exhausting the smoke-filled air from inside the home, weather-permitting
  • Air scrubbers use charcoal filters to trap odorous particles as it filters clean air back into the environment.
  • Hydroxyl generators produce pairing bonds to neutralize airborne odors

How Does Fogging Help?

  • Foggers recreate smoke by traveling in a fog throughout your home, reaching every nook and cranny.

Can Homes Be Livable Right After a Sevierville Housefire?

After a fire loss incident, identifying the immediate threats to a Sevierville home is only a portion of the emergency services required. Not every situation and emergency demands occupants relocate to a safer area, which makes immediate restoration practices vital to make living in the damaged home as uncomplicated as possible. Making this possible can save an insurance provider or customer the costs of Additional Living Expenses (ALE.)

Whenever possible for a homeowner to stay after fire damage to Sevierville properties, our SERVPRO professionals must work quickly to address for primary obstacles that exist and impede on comfortable living. While the customer living around the ongoing restoration can be a complication in itself, we work hard to ensure that these situations are as agreeable to the homeowner and their family as possible. We address four critical areas immediately.

  • Odor Removal – Undoubtedly, fire damages are going to leave behind powerful and noxious odors that are overwhelming. We have practical deodorization strategies, including the application of our thermal foggers, which are safe to use while others are in the house.
  • Cleaning – While this is always a component to our restoration after a fire, when the occupants continue to live in the house during recovery, cleaning of heavily used areas like bathrooms and kitchens must take precedence over other restorative tasks.
  • Laundry – We can help to ensure that damaged clothing in the house gets adequately cleaned. Our SERVPRO professionals look to the customer for guidance in which apparel needs returned immediately.
  • Containing the fire damage – Because of migrating effects that can pose health concerns for the occupants of the house, or merely the possibility of cross-contamination, we can establish containment barriers when possible to limit traffic into recovery areas.

While allowing homeowners and their families to remain in a structure after a fire loss can save them on additional expenses and stress, it adds an even higher level of urgency to the restoration process for our team. No matter how we can help after a fire, you can count on the expertise and fast response of our SERVPRO of Sevier, Jefferson & Cocke Counties team. Give us a call today at (865) 429-8885.
